In this drawing, I wanted to mainly focus on the complexity of the mannequin in the reference photo. In order to do that, I gave the mannequin more detail than the rest of the piece. I did this by using colored pencils as a base layer of the drawing and by using acrylic paints for small highlights and details. For the lightbulbs and the cube, I used copic markers as a base and layered colored pencils and acrylics on top of the marker. For the background, I watered down some acrylic paint and doused it wherever I needed to make it as accurate to the reference photo as possible. Overall, I used a variety of colored pencils, acrylics, and copic markers to create this wonderful artwork.
Inner Demons
This piece depicts social anxiety and how it effects those afflicted by it. It relates to my question which is how I can show different disorders which are caused by or cause anxiety in that it depicts an individual whose head tells him that nobody likes him and that he is hated by everyone. He also sees people as evil demons in his head because he is scared of confronting people and it is scary for him to do so. I used many different types of charcoal to make this piece have more value, and used a black multimedia paper to make the work overall look more scary and dark. To create this piece I started off with making a grid to make proportions and perspective easier, and filled in areas accordingly with charcoal. I made little cracks in the walls and holes in the curtains in the background to make this piece look spookier, as having social anxiety causes lots of issues, including some that make people and enviroments with lots of people scarier than what they really are.
Little Old Elephant
The reason I chose to draw a stuffed elephant was to represent how a child may cope with the anxieties of their life. I used charcoal pencils on drawing paper to make the elephant appear to be more old than what it is. To create the piece. I first started with a sketch and then layered charcoal on top to give the elephant more form. To give the elephant a worn look, I used a 2b charcoal pencil to create fine hairs and a white gel pen to create small highlights. In all, I believe this piece properly represents what I was going for and am proud of how it appears.
Swamped by Emotions
To create this piece I used a Wacom Cintiq tablet and the program photoshop. I used various photoshop brushes to define and revise the work from the overall sketch. My question is how can I display different disorders that are caused by/cause anxiety using figures and environments in my art? This work pertains to my question in that it relates to how depression causes so much anxiety that it eventually leads to a downfall of emotions. The overall size of my work is 16 by 20 inches.
Playful Worn Teddy
This drawing was made to depict how children use toys to help cope with their childhood anxieties. I used a Wacom cintiq tablet with the program photoshop to create this work. To draw this work I used many different brushes I downloaded as well as many different mark making techniques to show the complexity of the fur.
The Little Girl and Her Bear
This depicts a war torn girl from Afghanistan struggling as ptsd overwhelms her with anxieties and guilt. To depict this piece in a surreal manor, I chose to create it on my Wacom Cintiq tablet using the program photoshop. To start this work I created a sketch and built up many layers on top of it using various different brush techniques and colors to revise the beginning sketch. The Overall size is 16 by 20 in
I LOVE You
This work depicts a women in an abusive relationship who suffers from many anxieties over trying to leave her boyfriend. For this piece I used the program Photoshop on my Wacom Cintiq tablet to make this piece more realistic. To begin this work I looked up what abusive relationships do to a person and what anxieties they cause. I also looked up how bruises are formed and how cuts bleed to make the viewer know that she is being abused and to make them have sympathy towards her. This piece is overall 16 x 20in.
Crossing the Rainbow
This work was created to help my mom's best friend grief over the loss of her pet donkey. Grieving can cause lots of sadness and anxiety in an individual, so I wanted to depict those ideas into a work in a brighter manor. To create this work I used my Wacom Cintiq tablet and the program photoshop using various downloaded brushes on it. To start this work, I first looked up pictures of donkeys to make the drawing show the whole face of the donkey rather than the cut off face in the original reference.
WHO AM I
This piece depicts the overall mindset of a person suffering from multiple personality disorder. To further depict the severe anxiety this disorder causes, I created a glitch effect and used the colors blue and red to intensify the setting to make the viewer understand what she is going through. I also revised the previous sketches by making her have a stronger expression for her to seem more filled with anxiety and pain than just the nervous expression I used before. This piece was created in a 14 x 17 format using the program photoshop and several downloaded brushes from online and my wacom tablet.
Don't Flinch
In creating this piece, I depicted the severe anxiety in which sleep paralysis causes in those who are affected by it by painting a demon hovering over a women who cannot speak nor move due to her being in a nightmare. I used acrylic paints on a 16 x 20 canvas as well as a matte varnish on top of the work to keep the work dark. I started with sketching the layout of the work then I layered paint on top of the pencil. To create a nightmarish feel, I added several watered down washes for the shadows.
Monster Within the Mind
To further depict how ones mind can be affected by having schizophrenia, I depicted a women hiding from a horrid monster that looks as if it is crawling through her house. To show that the monster is not real I used various techniques to create a mirror in the hallway that does not reflect the monster at all. I used my wacom tablet to create this work on photoshop and the overall work is 14 X 17 inches.
The "Perfect" Body
This project relates to the struggle many women face in our modern day society: anorexia. To make this women look like she has the disorder, I looked at many different reference photos of the bone structure of the human body and made her skinnier. I used colored pencils to achieve a rougher look in my work as it makes the overall work look more intense and scarier. I also used charcoal in the background to make the colored pencil stand out more, as well as some white gel pen to create the water droplets from the shower. This piece is overall 16 x 20 inches.
Flowering Wounds
In creating this project I wanted to depict how much many people struggle with self hate, and how that hatred may lead to them mauling up their own beautiful bodies. To represent the hatred this person has for themselves, I added many different flowers, each with its own horrible meaning behind it. I also used many washes of acrylic paints and sanded the canvas I painted on to get a smoother, more realistic look to the finished piece. I ended up adding a white wash to the mirror in the background to make more attention go towards the foreground of the piece. Overall this piece is 16 x 20 inches.
